Doko Depot, Two Counties, and the State Stone Quarried Just Up the Road
The town's two-county footprint is a geology story as much as a map line. Blythewood sits in Richland and Fairfield counties, and Fairfield County is where Winnsboro blue granite came out of the ground, the stone that South Carolina Code Section 1-1-620 designates as the official stone of the state. Blue granite is light blue, carries visible particles of mica, feldspar and quartz, and was cut into the State House in Columbia, New York's Flat-Iron Building, Charleston's old Post Office, the Charleston Naval Shipyard dry dock, and the Jean Ribaut Monument at Parris Island. It took a medal and diploma at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and was known in the trade as the silk of the trade. Homeowners here regularly ask for it by name. Not as freshly quarried South Carolina stone. Winnsboro blue granite from Fairfield County is the official state stone under South Carolina Code Section 1-1-620, and it is light blue with visible mica, feldspar and quartz. After South Carolina production ceased, remaining stock came out of Elberton, Georgia. So it is a sourcing question rather than a menu item: availability depends on what a supplier actually holds. Will construction traffic delay a Blythewood install?
It can, and it is worth planning around. A new I-77 Exit 26 interchange is being built to serve the vehicle plant, together with connector roads, a U.S. 21 relocation, railroad work and widening of northbound I-77. Blythewood Road is separately being widened to four lanes from Exit 27 to Syrup Mill Road under the Richland County Penny Project.
